Call to upgrade Naharkatia into a subdivision

By Correspondent

NAMRUP, July 23 There is strong resentment among the people of No. 120 Naharkatia LAC as the State Government has allegedly neglected their demand to upgrade Naharkatia into a subdivisional headquarters under the Dibrugarh district.

The main thrust for the creation of Naharkatia as a subdivision relates to the decentralisation of administrative function to facilitate easy access for the common people. But the long-standing demand raised on different platforms from time to time has been on the backburner due to alleged executive lethargy, giving rise to disenchantment.

It may be stated here that most districts of upper Assam are poorly urbanised and almost all the areas are rural-based except the district headquarters which manage administration, trade and commerce.

The Dibrugarh district is no exception as all administrative units are located at its headquarters. People from far-off locations have to visit Dibrugarh even for a minor job.

It may be mentioned that the original Dibrugarh district was bifurcated into three districts Lakhimpur, Tinsukia and Dibrugarh. Lakhimpur and Tinsukia districts have already got three subdivisions each, whereas the original Dibrugarh district has hitherto been deprived of even a single subdivision.

As per information available from sources, almost all the infrastructural facilities are abundant in Naharkatia for the creation of a subdivisional headquarters. Hence the people have once again urged the State Government to fulfil their demand for upgrading Naharkatia into a subdivision.

The onus solely rests on local MLA Pranati Phukan, State Cabinet Minister of Handloom, Textile and Cultural Affairs, who has been reiterating the demand on competent platforms. The conscious citizens of the constituency are hopeful that Pranati Phukan would raise the issue more strongly to upgrade Naharkatia into a subdivision under Dibrugarh district.
