Call to restore GU museum

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Sept 15 - Noted museologist and ex-Director General of the National Museum Dr Rabin Dev Choudhury has urged Education Minister Siddhartha Bhattacharyya to ask the Gauhati University Vice Chancellor to re-establish the museum of the its commerce department, which was once a vibrant museum.

In a letter to the Minister, Dr Choudhury requested him to requisition the services of the National Museum Institute in the matter.

The GU Department of Commerce had set up the museum at the instance of its then head of the department Prof KN Saikia. It had a good number of objects on display, including a sizeable number of cultural artifacts, which were collected by PC Burhagohain.

But now, said Dr Choudhury, the objects of the museum are no longer there. He said he has taken up the matter with the GU Vice Chancellor. But no discernable step has been taken by the GU authorities so far, he rued.

He also said he has written to the States Chief Secretary urging him to institute an inquiry into the matter, but nobody seems to be serious about it.
