Call to reopen railway gate closed since March

GUWAHATI, Oct 3 - The Central Guwahati Development Committee and All Guwahati Traders� Association met Hari Singh, ADRM, NF Railway here on Thursday and jointly submitted a memorandum requesting him to reopen the exit and entry gate on the Paltan Bazar side which was closed down by the railway authorities in March this year.

The memorandum stated that many commercial establishments situated in Paltan Bazar area are suffering tremendously as train passengers are forced to use the gate situated on the Panbazar side for exit/entry. Further, large numbers of train commuters prefer the Paltan Bazar gate due to availability of various transportation services, hotels and other commercial shops and restaurants, it pointed out.

Debashish Sengupta, working president and Rajib Das, general secretary of the development committee appealed to the railway authorities to construct a new attractive gate on the Paltan Bazar side as visitors from outside the State mostly stay at the hotels and lodges situated at Paltan Bazar. For the visitors to have a good impression of the gateway of the North East, it is important to add some aesthetic value to Paltan Bazar area, especially the railway station�s entry/exit point, the citizens� body stated.
