Call to open Judges Field for state functions

By Staff reporter

GUWAHATI, Aug 13 Alleging that a powerful vested interest lobby was promoting its own interests at the historic Judges Field under the pretext of preserving the field for sports, several distinguished citizens have urged the Kamrup (Metro) Deputy Commissioner to make it open for holding the Independence Day and Republic Day celebrations two occasions traditionally associated with the Judges Field.

In a memorandum to the DC, the citizens said that the venue for the I-Day and Republic Day celebrations was shifted to the Latasil ground a few years back under the plea of construction of boundary walls and some developmental works at the Judges Field but even after the completion of the walls and development works the field was being kept outside the purview of holding of the two important state functions.

The memo said that the powerful lobby which was now controlling the affairs of the Judges Field had been holding different functions besides restricting the area of the field by constructing an RCC building but was preventing the holding of the I-day and Republic Day functions.

This is very unfortunate that the administration failed to hold the two state functions at the Judges Field after completion of its developmental works. Your inaction definitely caused total disregard and disrespect to these two important state functions, it said.

The signatories to the memo included Kamakhya Prasad Das, Padma Hazarika, Jatin Goswami, Hema Bharali, Shakuntala Choudhury and Ajay Dutta.
