Call to evict encroachers from GMC market

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Nov 3 The traders association of the Fancy Bazar GMC Market Complex has called upon the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) to evict all illegal encroachments from the place and ensure proper hygiene and security so that the market can emerge as a model in the northeastern region.

Javed Husain, secretary of the Fruits, Vegetables and Other Traders Association of Fancy Bazar GMC Market Complex, said today that despite repeated appeals to the municipal authorities no steps have been taken to correct wrongdoings at the place by some unscrupulous people.

Building byelaws have been violated by some people who have illegally encroached on the drinking water supply space, the parking area and the place meant to be used for garbage disposal. Such elements have illegally occupied these areas in the markets and rented them out. Even the parking area has been encroached, he said.

He accused that a kind of syndicate raj is operating in the market at the hands of some persons.

After 8 pm, the market turns into a hell hole with drunken elements openly moving around. Genuine allottees have at times been deprived of their legitimate space. There is no provision for security, nothing has been done with regard to cleaning of the market and disposing garbage. Besides, the fish market has been totally isolated from the main market, Husain said.

He said the market is over a hundred years old and there are 339 authorized allottees. Husain said a group of people are undertaking illegal activities in the name of another association which has been defunct for over 16 years.

We call upon the district administration and the GMC to take action in this regard. With proper vision, the market can be developed as a showcase model in the North East, Husain said.
