Call to disarm pro-talk ultras

GUWAHATI, March 22 � The Forum for Terrorist Victims Family, Assam met the Union Home Secretary in New Delhi recently and submitted a memorandum demanding immediate seizure of weapons from the pro-talk members of the banned outfits including the ULFA and the NDFB to ensure free and fair Assembly polls.

�Going by the recent incidents, it is evident the militant groups are still indulging in acts like extortion and we feel that they could well be used during the polls,� Brojen Hazarika, president of the forum stated.

The forum also demanded that all the pro-talk militants should be sent to designated camps immediately so that people can exercise their franchise without any fear.

The Union Home Secretary, according to the forum, has assured necessary steps in this regard.

The memorandum submitted to the Union Home Secretary also demanded that all the pending cases against the militants be sent for trial within a year and speedy trial of the chargesheeted cases should be ensured.

It also demanded that more designated courts should be set up in the State and all the cases should be reinvestigated with proper protection to the witnesses.

�The cases, which have been disposed of by the designated court on technical grounds should be reinvestigated by the Special Investigation Team,� the memorandum stated.

The forum has also been demanding that representatives of the forum be also made party in the peace process.

It has also demanded that the Government must provide relief assistance as provided to victims in other States.

The forum also urged the Government to introduce a curriculum that would develop a non-violent mindset among the students from the primary level.

The forum also met the Law Registrar of National Human Rights Commission, Chief Election Commissioner and DoNER Minister BK Handique pressing for fulfilments of their demands.
