DERGAON, Jan 2 Despite the passage of 287 years, the Shiva Doul at Negheriting here has not been properly developed. Due to the alleged negligence of the Government, the important pilgrimage centre has not fully grown into a tourist spot despite the natural beauty of the place and the presence of the historic Shiva temple. This was stated by Bedanta Barua, a visitor to the temple on Thursday.

More than 1,000 picnickers thronged the Negheriting Shiva Doul, one km north from the NH-37 at Negheriting Chariali under the Dergaon PS in Golaghat district, on the New Years Day yesterday.

The picnickers from Nagaon, Jorhat, Sivasagar and Golaghat districts arranged feasts and enjoyed the first day of the New Year at the site.

It is pertinent to mention that the temple was built by Ahom king Rajeswar Singha in 1727 AD. Since then, the temple has been used by devotees. There is a big pond and some highland in an abandoned state on which plantation can easily be done. The Archaeological Survey of India has taken possession of the site, but nothing has been done to develop it.

The visitors and local residents have demanded of the Government to make the site a tourist spot at an early date.
