Call to declare Christmas Eve as holiday

By CORRESPONDENT

TURA, Dec 21 - The Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) Garo Hills has expressed surprise after a school from the plain belt in New Bhatibari under West Garo Hills (WGH) has asked its teachers to attend school on December 24, i.e., Christmas Eve.

As per the NGO, the school, identified as Down Hill, is a private school in the area.

It has been learnt that the school has asked its teachers to come to school on Christmas Eve. We respect all religions, but this goes against the spirit of tolerance for us. Calling for work on a day when Christmas holidays begin is really not how the spirit needs to be propagated, said FKJGP president Pritam Arengh.

The NGO has now requested the school authority to declare the day as a holiday for all the staff and students so that all may enjoy the spirit of Christmas.
