Call for specific provision for Assam, NE in Bill

GUWAHATI, Jan 7 - Reacting to the widespread opposition from all over Assam against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016, senior journalist DN Chakravartty has said outright rejection of the Bill might give a bad signal about Assam to the rest of the country.

�It would be strategically prudent to demand some amendment to the Bill incorporating a specific provision that, while the Bill will be applicable to the rest of the country, it will not be applicable to Assam and the northeastern region in view of the fact that Assam has already given shelter to about nine million Hindu refugees from erstwhile East Pakistan.
