Call for clear policies to protect indigenous people of State

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, March 10 - Asking both the Union and the State governments to come out with clear policies to protect the indigenous people of the State from the invasion of illegal migrants, the Prabrajan Virodhi Manch today said that unless a timely step was taken, the indigenous people of Assam would become a minority in their own land by 2040.

Commending the BPF and the All Bodo Students Union (ABSU) for their statements on the State governments lackadaisical attitude towards protecting the interests of the indigenous people of the State, the Manch said that the present government needs such reminders from the partners of coalition as well as other indigenous people so that it does not sit complacent at a time when a threat looms large on the very existence of the indigenous communities of the State.

The Manch, which has been fighting against encroachment on government land, grazing land, reserve forest land, etc., by people of doubtful nationality, further stated that the pubic representatives have accountability towards the people of the State who had voted them to power.

The issue is entirely a political one and thus, it becomes pertinent that the political parties that took the reins in the name of jati, mati, bheti act immediately so that no further damage is caused to the indigenous people, Manch convener Upamanyu Hazarika stated.

Also lauding the role of former Meghalaya Governor RS Mushahary and former Chief Election Commission HS Brahma for their eloquence on various issues concerning the threat and dangers faced by the Bodo people, he said that despite being government functionaries, both the leaders had voiced their concern on various issues time and again. The leaders of the ruling coalition must also speak up clearly on the policies and measures taken for safeguarding the interests of the indigenous people of the State, Hazarika added.
