SILCHAR, Sept 12 - At a time when the Government is laying maximum thrust on the availability of teachers in educational institutions across the State, the Jatrapur-Rajnagar (JR) Higher Secondary School at Gonirgram under Katigorah constituency in Cachar district, which was established in 1947, is woefully shortstaffed.
Sources informed that the school has 1,245 students from Class-VI to Class-XII. But instead of the mandated 38 teachers, only 14 teachers manage the academic proceedings in as many as 16 classrooms.
�The school management is faced with this peculiar staff crunch, and more importantly, there is no principal,� sources informed.
It is learnt that the school has 22 posts sanctioned for assistant teachers, while only eight assistant teachers are available.
For imparting lessons in 14 sections, only one Science teacher is available, and in the Higher Secondary section, instead of nine teachers, only six teachers take classes with no one to take classes for Bengali and Economics. In place of a fulltime Principal, Altaf Hussain Laskar, the Academic Incharge has been manning the scanty human resources available.
�Acute scarcity of teachers in such numbers is a violation of the Right To Education(RTE), which clearly mentions about one teacher for every 30 students. But in this school, there is one teacher for 88 students,� claimed a highly placed source in the school.
Meanwhile, even as the Cachar district Inspector of Schools Anup Kumar Das admitted the largescale shoratge of teachers in the school under reference, he was of the view that only Government action in this regard can improve the situation.
�We have repeatedly sent reports on the piquant situation to the concerned higher authorities. It is upto the Government to respond to the situation,� Das maintained.
