Cabinet decides to form new division in State

GUWAHATI, Oct 8 - The State Cabinet today decided to create one new division comprising four districts, while steps have also been initiated to ensure better facilities to the tea garden workers.

An official release said that the Cabinet, in its meeting, decided that the headquarters of the new division would be located in Nagaon. The new division, to be called the Central Assam Division, will cover districts of Nagaon, Morigaon, Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao. The districts of Udalguri and Darrang will be attached to the Northern Assam Division, while the Barak Valley districts of Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi will be parts of the Barak Valley Division.

The Cabinet also decided to amend the Assam Gratuity Act, 1992 to provide better facilities to the tea garden and factory workers. After the amendment to the Act, the tea workers will now get facilities at par with the other industries.

The Cabinet decided to invest an amount of Rs 65 crore for revival of the Prag Boshimi Synthetics Limited, while it also decided to amend the Assam Ministerial District Establishment Service rules to improve promotion avenues of the workers.

The Cabinet approved the rules for providing a grant of Rs 1,000 each to 200 widows in each Assembly constituency, while 300 unmarried women in each constituency in the age group of 40 to 60 years would get a grant of Rs 10,000 each.

The Cabinet also approved the rules for providing a grant of Rs 10,000 for marriage of girls belonging to the families living below the poverty line.
