By-poll fever grips Mokokchung

By Correspondent

DIMAPUR, March 22 The by-election to the Aonglenden Assembly constituency is slated to be a hotly contested fight and while the political parties are keeping the names of their candidates close to the chest, speculations are already doing the rounds.

The by-poll has been necessitated following the demise of sitting MLA and senior Congress veteran Nungshizenba Longkumer in November last year.

Aonglenden seat is a traditional stronghold of the Congress and non-Congress parties have thus far been unable to get a footing. In the last general election, Independent candidate Imtikmzk and NPFs Toshipokba did pose some challenge but ultimately Nungshizenba of Congress won the day. Now the upcoming by-poll has become crucial for both the Congress and the NPF.

Three aspiring candidates are reported to have already submitted letters to the NPF Mokokchung Division office expressing their interest and seeking the party ticket. Late Nungshizenbas wife, Pangerla, has also joined the NPF apparently with an eye on the by-election.

The others seeking NPF ticket are R Lima Pongen, a veteran politician, Imtikmzk, NPF, and Toshipokba, a member of the partys CEC.

As for the Congress, there is speculation of former Maharashtra Governor SC Jamir joining the fray.
