Burning problems of Assam discussed

By Correspondent

TINSUKIA, Dec 18 - The burning problems of Assam were discussed in a conference organised by the Asom Andolan Sangrami Mancha at the District Library auditorium here today.

Addressing the meeting chaired by Prakash Dutta, president of the organising committee, former Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta alleged that both the Union Government and the State Government have been betraying the people of the State by adopting anti-Assam policies.

The BJP, which is the chief constituent of the NDA Government at the Centre, had assured the people of Assam before the Lok Sabha elections that the State will be free of illegal migrants and the Assam Accord would be implemented in its true sense, but the same government now had issued a circular to offer stay right to the non-Muslim migrants, he said. It has made the Assam Accord meaningless, Mahanta added.

Similarly, the present State Government led by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi had for the last 15 years totally failed to redress the woes of the people and maintain peace in the society, Mahanta alleged. Rather it had pushed the State back to many years with rampant corruption in every sphere, unchecked price rise, syndicate raj, etc., he added.

The conference was also addressed by leaders Kumar Dipak Das, Barki Prasad Telenga, Bhaben Baruah, Israel Nanda and Bani Changmai and writer Punya Saikia. They appealed to the people of Assam to stand unite for fighting the anti-Assam forces. Rich tributes were also paid to the martyrs of Assam Agitation.
