By STAFF CORRESPONDENT

JORHAT, Feb 14: Continuing with their burglary spree, thieves on Tuesday night burgled a hardware shop at Fasi Ali locality here and reportedly decamped with Rs 6000.

It may be mentioned here that on January 29 night, five shops alongside the Baghmibar Nilomani Phukan Road (also known as Fish Market Road) were burgled.

On January 22 night, nine shops were burgled at two different areas (Bongalpukhuri and Jail Road) of the town. In the first half of January, seven shops were burgled in Tarajan locality.

A police source said that night patrolling by policemen have been intensified in recent times, but as most of the street lights in the town are not functioning and shopkeepers mostly keep the lights in front of their shops switched off, criminals are able to commit theft.

The source said that 8 youths have been arrested in the past fortnight on charges of committing theft in shops.

It may be mentioned here that on January 29, State Assembly Speaker and Jorhat MLA Hitendra Nath Goswami had launched 'Project Third Eye' at the Jorhat Police Station under which 32 CCTV cameras were installed at several prominent places of the town.
