DIBRUGARH, May 4 Condemning the recent spate of violence in the State, Assam BJP president Sarbananda Sonowal demanded that Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi ensure the right to life of every citizen. He said Gogoi has failed on all fronts and now, citizens do not even know if they are safe.

Sonowal said special security measures have become essential in the BTAD area of the State, as violence there has not been quelled by routine policing activity. He also demanded of the Assam Government to pay Rs 10 lakh as ex gratia to the next of kin of all killed in the BTAD area since May 1.

He also asked BTC chief Hagrama Mohilary to declare his intent to keep all sections of society safe from any physical harm. Sonowal alleged that the BTC administration too has been found wanting in securing the lives of all citizens.

Nagaon Correspondent adds: The Asomiya Sahitya Sanmilani (ASS) has expressed concern over the killings in the BTAD area. In a statement, ASS president Dr Hiren Gohain, working president Dr Dilip Bora and secretary general MM Baruah said that the State Government should immediately intervene to check the violence.

The ASS office-bearers said that the killings would not solve any problem and would only harm the age-old unity of the State. The government should take strong action against the perpetrators of violence, they added and appealed to all sections of the people to maintain peace and harmony.

The Sadou Adivasi Jatiya Sangha, Asom, has also condemned the attacks on innocent people in Bodoland. In a press statement, it demanded the resignation of the Tarun Gogoi Government for failing to protect the common people of the State. The statement also appealed for peace at this crucial juncture.

The AIUDF, Nagaon district unit, also condemned the latest killing spree in the BTAD area. The AIUDF demanded compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the next of kin of those killed and Rs 5 lakh to the injured. The statement, signed by the AIUDF unit president Abul Hussain and general secretary Zakir Hussain Choudhury also demanded seizure of all illegal arms in the BTAD area and arrest of the culprits.

Bokakhat Correspondent adds: The Sanskritik Mahasabha, Asom has condemned the barbaric and inhuman killings in the Bodoland Territorial Autonomous Districts (BTAD) area. In a press release signed by Mahasabhas president Sankar Das and general secretary Achyut Hazarika, the duo appealed to all the people living in the BTAD area, irrespective of caste, creed, community and religion, to maintain peace and harmony. The Mahasabha also demanded of the government to control the situation sternly.
