BSNL plans to stop cable damages

GUWAHATI, July 16 � Cable network damage caused by various government agencies has emerged as a major headache for the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and it is now planning to develop a plan in tandem with the agencies to arrest the trend.

The BSNL authority has also expressed concern over the rising number of cable theft cases in Kamrup. The BSNL Kamrup division has been caused loss amounting to Rs 1.8 lakh due to cable thefts in the span of last three months.

�Massive digging work carried out by the Public Works Department (PWD), National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), Guwahati Development Department and the Guwahati Municipal Corporation has been causing severe cable network damages leading to service interruption,� said K Manohar, senior general manager, BSNL, Kamrup circle at a press conference here today.

�We have written to them and are working in liaison with the agencies to avert recurrence of such digging related problems,� Manohar stated, adding that the PWD has paid Rs 2.75 lakh as compensation in the last three months.

In view of this, the BSNL, Kamrup, has launched a 'Dial before You Dig' service to enable the public to help BSNL authorities by intimating about the digging activities in Kamrup Telecom district by dialing 12677, which is a toll free number.

K Manohar also briefed the media about various development activities and promotional affairs in the Kamrup circle.

Members of the Telephone Advisory Council were also present on the occasion.
