Bridge collapses; communication snapped

By Correspondent

BARPETA, April 4 The road communication between Sarthebari and Kayakuchi via Nasatra, Neularbhitha, Bhaktardaba in Barpeta district was completely snapped on Friday after a sand-laden truck fell in a ditch which led to the collapse of a bridge near Nasatra. A large truck carrying sand for an under- construction bridge on the Nasatra-Belbari road towards the Krishnaguru Sewasram in Barpeta district fell when it approached the wooden bridge on Friday morning.

As the road to the south of Nasatra is closed due to the on going construction of a bridge, there is no other link for the people of a large area on the northern side of Barpeta town with Sarthebari on the east and Kayakuchi on the west. The condition of roads in the area has been beyond description for a long time. The Sarthebari-Kayakuchi road was built under the Prime Minister Gram Sadak Yojana and was completed in 2012. But the woes of the people did not end as several parts of that road were washed away by the devastating floods that year itself.

The important road regarded as the heartline of about 100 villages remains suitable for vehicular traffic only during the winter season as subways on the breached portions of the road are diverted through low-lying areas. During summer, communication is not possible for any kind of vehicle. But the collapse of the bridge has closed the road before the rainy season has even begun.
