Borgeet contest on October 22

GUWAHATI, Oct 7 - New Art Players (NAP), Guwahati, a leading socio-cultural organisation of the State, is organising a Borgeet competition for the seventh consecutive year in memory of its member and popular artiste of past years, late Bina De, on October 22 at the Magor Auditorium of Vivekananda Kendra here, a press release stated.

Borgeet, created by Srimanta Sankaradeva and Madhavadeva some 600 years ago, can infuse into youth a rare golden quality which helps in developing true human beings endowed with spiritualism and ideal character. Keeping this as the main aim, the Bina De Memorial Trust and New Art Players have embarked upon the idea of holding a Borgeet competition since 2010.

Competitors with minimum 16 years of age can take part in the event and they are to sing a Borgeet of their own choice within ten minutes. Each participant will be allowed to use a maximum of four instrumentalists for khol, taal, flute, violin or sarinda.

Besides permanent trophies and certificates of merit to be awarded to the best three competitors, there will be cash prizes of Rs 10,000, Rs 7,000 and Rs 5,000 respectively. Further, Rs 1,000 each will be awarded to the best four accompanying instrumentalists individually. The last date of joining is October 20.
