Book on Assamese diaspora

GUWAHATI, March 6 � A book of collected articles titled, Assamese Diaspora: An outlook, published by the Publication Cell of the Department of English of RG Baruah College, was released by Kamal Chandra Hazarika and Prof Dinesh Chandra Baroowa, president of the college governing body, at a function at the college premises here recently, a press release said.

The function began with a song performed by Sanjay Kumar Saikia, assistant professor in the Department of Economics. The gathering was then informed of the idea and purpose behind publication of the book by Rupam Hazarika, assistant professor in the Department of English and editor of the book. He explained that the book contains not only articles written by university and college teachers but also views expressed by various members of the Assamese diaspora.

Speaking on the occasion, professor Baroowa lauded the department for the initiative and hoped that the book would be a valuable addition to the field of diaspora studies. Kamal Hazarika, in his speech, recollected his experiences in London over the years. His wife Dheera Hazarika also addressed the meeting. The principal of the college, Dr Babita Choudhury, whle praising the members associated with the book, also urged them to publish more such books in future.

The book is partially funded by the Extension Education Cell of the college. The meeting was conducted by Bonti Senchowa, the head of the department and Sarmistha Das. The function came to an end with a vote of thanks offered by Bharat Bora, an associate professor in the department, the release added.
