Bongaigaon Refinery completes accident-free decade

GUWAHATI, March 1 � The Bongaigaon Refinery of Indian Oil Corporation Limited achieved an unprecedented record performance in industrial safety management with the completion of ten years or 40.22 million hours without �Loss Time Accident� (LTA) on February 23 this year, a press release stated. The achievement is the result of dedicated endeavour in creating and maintaining work-friendly and safe environment across the organisation, more particularly for its strict and robust adherence to industrial safety norms. The rare distinction is also a clear indication of the strong commitment of its employees towards safe operation of the equipment and proper maintenance of the installations for ensuring sustainability of their safe conditions.

A Saran, Executive Director, congratulated the employees of the Bongaigaon Refinery and other associates including contract workers, contractors and others for their sincere efforts in adhering to safety norms and completion of ten years without LTA.

The Bongaigaon Refinery has an excellent track record of industrial safety management. It is in recognition of its outstanding safety performances that the refinery has been continuously awarded prizes by various government and non-government organisations. To mention a few in the recent past, the Bongaigaon Refinery was awarded the National Safety Awards both in the category of Accident-free Period� and �Lowest Accident Frequency Rate,� National Safety Council Safety Award, 10th Annual Greentech Safety Gold award for the year 2011 for outstanding performance in Safety Management in Petroleum Refinery Sector, the AV Ogale running shield for Safety and Fire Prevention in IOCL refineries for the year 2010-2011 and the Safety Innovation Award 2011 for implementing innovative safety management systems.

The International Sustainability Rating System-8th Edition (earlier called International Safety Rating System) was successfully implemented in the Bongaigaon Refinery with the completion of Omega assessment by DNV Energy Mumbai on November 18, 2011. With this, the Bongaigaon Refinery has become the first organisation in India to introduce the latest ISRS (8th edition) Protocol, which is an integrated version of the Process Safety Management and includes updates to reflect changes in international standards including OHSAS 18001: 2007, ISO 14001: 2004, ISO 9001: 2008 and Global Reporting Initiative, 2006, the release added.
