Boiragimoth community Bihu

DIBRUGARH, April 21 - A colourful cultural procession was taken out today involving various cultural troupes on Convoy Road and Mancotta Road with tuskers at the front as part of the concluding ceremony of the three-day golden jubilee celebration of the Boiragimoth Rongali Bihu Sanmelan.

The Bihu Sanmelan is annually organised by the local community in association with Navarupa Sangha of Boiragimoth at the DDSA Outdoor Stadium. As part of the golden jubilee celebration this year, the community Bihu got off on April 19 with flag hoisting, smriti tarpan, inauguration of turons followed by various Bihu dance and singing competitions, besides art and a few sports events.

To conclude, the local community members turned up in big numbers for the cultural procession and subsequent open session, prize distribution, book release, felicitation function and entertainment programme.

A procession was taken out upto Thana Chariali. Several cultural troupes from Deori, Ahom, Nepali, tea garden and Gorkha communities took part in the procession, among others. The open session was attended by several eminent persons, including Dr Karabi Deka Hazarika, and writer Prahlad Tasa.

The first community Bihu was organised at Boiragimoth in 1969. There were about 45 families at Boiragimoth then. Some of the prominent personalities who performed in the earlier Bihu functions included Dr Bhupen Hazarika, Khagen Mahanta, Archana Mahanta, Mohendra Hazarika, Dipen Baruah, Samar Hazarika, JP Das, Chetona Das and Bipin Chowdang. The three-day golden jubilee celebration of the community Bihu will conclude on midnight after Zubeen Garg takes to stage.
