Body of AAU Prof found hanging in office chamber

JORHAT, May 12 - The body of Professor Abhijit Sarma of the Agronomy Department of Assam Agricultural University here at Borbheta was found hanging in his office room this morning.

An AAU source stated that Sarma, who was in his fifties, was reportedly spotted hanging by the watchman from outside the window, following which he informed the authorities.

A police official said that as per information collected during preliminary investigation, Sarma who resided in the old campus of AAU, came to office early at about 8 am reportedly telling his family members he had to attend classes.

Sarma�s suicide note was recovered from the spot, the official said. Stating that the case was under investigation, the police official declined to reveal the contents of the letter.

The official however, said the word �being deceived� was mentioned in the note and when asked if there were any grievances mentioned against any person or authorities, the official said no name was mentioned.

Sarma is credited with having published a few books on his subject.

The body was subsequently sent for post mortem. Sharma, who originally hails from Amguri in Sivasagar district, is survived by his wife and two daughters.
