Bodoland cooperative signs pact with Bhutan chamber

By CORRESPONDENT

KOKRAJHAR, Aug 19 - In a bid to boost export of handicraft items to the neighbouring countries, the Bodoland Regional Apex Weavers & Artisans Co-operative Federation Ltd (BRAWFED), has taken a slew of initiatives.

To carry forward its plan, the BRAWFED has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Bhutan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) to hold an exhibition at Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan from September 12 with a four-day-long programme. The aim of the expo is to promote handicraft products produced by the local artisans, especially in the Bodoland areas. The MoU was signed by NN Rana Patgiri, Managing Director of BRAWFED and Chandra B. Chhetri, Deputy Secretary General of BCCI at a function held at Thimphu.

Handicraft items produced in the State have a huge demand across the global market. However, due to lack of market linkages, the products are yet to get proper attention.

BRAWFED, which has been promoting handicraft products by encouraging local artisans, has plans to hold expos in various parts of the neighbouring countries in the days to come.

Indo-Bhutan bilateral trade has seen growing in a right trejectory due to active co-operation from both sides. Another important aspect is that the BJP-led Government at the Centre under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given priority to improve relations between the countries.

Our products, especially hand-woven ones have a sizable market in Bhutan and Bangladesh, and, therefore, the expo will further strengthen our market in the future, a group of artisans told this correspondent. They also demanded opening of more trade points with Bhutan in a bid to boost bilateral trade.

It is learnt that the BRAWFED will also hold business-to-business meeting with the local buyers and stakeholders in Thimphu during the expo in order to promote business.
