Boat capsizes on Ranganadi; flood scene grim

NORTH LAKHIMPUR, Sept 2 - A boat capsized on overflowing Ranganadi river in Lakhimpur district on Tuesday as the flood situation turned critical in the district. The boat carrying ten school teachers from Kadamiyal to Potabeel in Nowboicha Revenue Circle capsized on the river in Potabeel on Tuesday morning. All the ten persons rescued by the villagers have been admitted to the North Lakhimpur Civil Hospital. The condition of three of them is stated to be critical.

Meanwhile, incessant rains have flooded most of the areas of Lakhimpur district with all the major rivers in spate. According to the district Water Resources Department, all the major rivers including the Brahmaputra, Subansiri, Dikrong and Pabha were following above the danger level. The Subansiri has inundated 55 villages in North Lakhimpur Revenue Circle. It has also affected 41 villages under Telahi mouza in North Lakhimpur. The Ranganadi embankment at Borbeel in Nowboicha Revenue Circle has been hit by the rising water levels of the river. The department has started protection work on that portion of the embankment at Borbeel.

The flood has also affected wide areas in Dhakuakhana sub-division. The overflowing Gainadi and Jiyadhal have inundated hundreds of villages in Subansiri and Dhakuakhana Revenue Circles. The subdivision has remained cut-off from the rest of the world as flood waters have overflowed over the state highway near the Sampora bridge in Ghilamora.

On Tuesay, the flood-affected people in Dhakuakhana have alleged irregularities in distribution of relief materials by the Lakhimpur district administration.
