Blood donation camps on Valentines Day

By Correspondent

AIZAWL, Feb 14 - Young lovers here flocked to the Dawrpui Multi Purpose Centre where a mass blood donation camp under the banner of Blood For Your Valentine was organised today. Those who donated blood were given roses in return by either their beloved or celebrities who were among the organisers.

Mizo youths not only give red roses to their Valentines, they also give blood to express their love for fellow human beings. This has become a trend in the State in recent times.

Altogether 888 youths across the State, including 242 girls, donated blood to mark the Valentines Day. In Aizawl, 371 youths aged between 18 to 40 years donated blood.

The blood donation drive was organised by the Mizoram State AIDS Control Society and the Aizawl-based Association for Voluntary Blood Donation, at the Aizawl Civil Hospital.

Information and Public Relations Minister Dr R Lalthangliana, who attended the blood donation camp here as the chief guest, said giving blood means saving ones life. Giving blood to the needy people is an ultimate form of showing love to our fellow human beings, he said. Blood donation camps were simultaneously held in all the district headquarters.

Meanwhile, gift shops in the State capital were crowded with young people buying presents for their dear ones. Candlelight parties and dinners were held by lovers and married couples in hotels, restaurants, farmhouses and also at some picnic spots outside the city to mark the Day of Love.

Pasighat Correspondent adds: AYANG, an Arunachal-based NGO dedicated to voluntary blood donation, on Thursday organised a blood donation camp at the Pasighat General Hospital in East Siang district to mark the Valentines Day.

The founder chairman of the NGO, Aini Talo, conducted the camp. The camp with the theme, Be a hero this Valentines by sharing your liquid love, encouraged the youths to voluntarily donate blood.

Students of Pasighat College of Horticulture and Forestry spearheaded the programme. More than 55 college students and local youths donated blood in the camp.

Talo has also achieved success in busting the myth that women cannot donate blood. She has organised all-women blood donation camps and taught women that they can donate blood if doctors certify that they are physically fit to do so.
