By Sobhapati Samom

IMPHAL, June 23 The economic blockade on Manipur has resulted in a loss of more than Rs 254 crore at the tune of Rs 4 crore per day, according to noted economist Prof N Mohendro.

Highlighting that the frequent bandhs and blockades in Manipur have adversely impacted the economy of the State, Prof Mohendro said, the bandhs and blockades recorded in the last three years (2004 to 2007) led to a loss of an approximate amount of Rs 1,319 crore.

In this period, there were about 234 days of blockades besides 110 days of bandhs in Manipur, the former University professor added. Prof Mohendro was speaking at the day-long Manipur Road Congress at Manipur Press Club here on Sunday.

He expressed the need to conduct a proper research on the loss to the economy in diverse sectors and document it for the future as everyone in the trouble-torn State have slowly begun to accept the culture of black market.

He described the United Clubs NH 53-sponsored Road Congress held under the theme National Highways in Manipur: Today and Tomorrow as an important event.

Justice C Upendra and president of United Clubs NH-53 Thongam Shama Khaba were the chief guest and president at the inaugural session of the Congress.
