BJP workers burn effigy of Cachar SP

By Correspondent

SILCHAR, Sept 28 - Protesting the preventive detention of local MLA Dilip Paul and other functionaries of the Cachar district, the BJP workers and supporters burnt effigies of the Superintendent of Police (SP), Rajveer Singh, outside the police stations in Silchar and other out posts across the district on Sunday.

Later, Dr Rajdeep Roy, State general secretary of the BJP said that two FIRs were filed against the SP, one by Dipayan Chakraborty, president of BJP Town Mandal Committee and another one by Mahila Morcha.

We have called for a peaceful Barak bandh against the police atrocities. If any untoward incident takes place during the bandh, the onus will be on the police administration, Dr Roy said. He added that the Mahila Morcha would stage a protest on Tuesday outside the SP office.

Meanwhile, the AIUDF has submitted a memorandum to MK Das, the Deputy Commissioner in-charge, stating that a deliberate attempt is made to stir ill-feeling and hatred among the two communities in Barak Valley. The party has urged both the district administration and the police to keep a strict vigil during the bandh.

On the other hand, the Inspector General of Police (Law and Order), S N Singh, is in Silchar to take stock of the situation.
