BJP wins Karbi Anglong council polls

DIPHU, June 22 - The Bharatiya Janata Party has won the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) election convincingly, winning 14 of the 26 constituencies till the time of filing of this report.

While independent candidates bagged two seats, the Congress has not been able to capture a single seat as yet.

BJP candidate Amar Sing Tisso opened the account for his party winning the Singhason constituency by defeating his nearest rival Pradip Singnar (independent) by 2,409 votes. Tarendra Brahma, BJP candidate from Langhin, defeated Rajandra Basumatary (independent), bagging 13,385 votes. Basumatary got 3,823 votes.

In West Karbi Anglong, D Uphing Maslai, the Education EM who failed to get a BJP ticket and later contested as an independent, won from the Armi constituency.

Lunsing Teron of the BJP defeated Bidyasing Rongpi at Mahamaya. Teron got 5,969 votes while Rongpi managed to get 4,361. Kache Rongpi won from Sochengdhenta. On the other hand, Richard Tokbi who contested as an independent won the Duarbagori seat, defeating BJP�s Ratan Enti. Darsing Ronghang of the BJP, who contested from Phuloni, defeated his nearest contender, Congress candidate Sanjib Teron. Ronghang got 5,216 while Teron managed to get 4,864.

The No.11 Langfer constituency also went to the BJP as Ramsing Timung defeated his nearest rival, independent candidate Phuding Terang. Timung got 12,861 votes while Terang bagged 7,177. Ritesh Enghi of the BJP defeated Congress candidate Ashok Teron by 1,370 votes.

The BJP also annexed the Hamren, Chingthong, Rongkhang, Duarmla and Socheng seats, with party candidates Pradeep Rongpi, Horen Sing Bey, Prabhat Chandra Taro, Rina Terangpi and Mongal Sing Timung winning from their constituencies, respectively. Mongal Sing Timung, the sitting MAC and EM, defeated his nearest contender, Congress candidate Mohan Engti by 2,151 votes.
