By Correspondent

ITANAGAR, Nov 22 - North East Democratic Alliances candidate Dasanglu Pul, who contested on a BJP ticket, won the Hayuliang Assembly seat defeating her lone rival Yompi Kri, an Independent candidate, by a margin of 942 votes.

Widow of former Chief Minister Kalikho Pul, Dasanglu Pul had secured 5,326 votes, while her rival Yompi Kri had garnered 4,384 votes.

A total of 108 voters opted for None of the Above (NOTA) option in the bye-election held on November 19, according to State Election Office sources here. An estimated 72 per cent voters exercised their franchise in the election.

The bye-poll to Hayuliang seat was necessitated due to the unnatural death of incumbent and former Chief Minister Kalikho Pul on August 9 last. With todays win, the strength of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), an alliance partner of ruling Peoples Party of Arunachal (PPA), in the 60-member Assembly has risen to 12.

While PPA has 43 MLAs, there are three Congress members and two Independents in the 60-member House.

Meanwhile, elated at party nominee Dasanglu Puls victory, Arunachal Pradesh BJP president Tapir Gao has rated it as a historic first for the Saffron party that has never won a bye-election in the State. While congratulating Pul on winning the contest and the people of Hayuliang for electing her, Gao said, this victory is a tribute to former Chief Minister late Kalikho Pul and the thousands of BJP karyakartas who have made it possible.

He claimed the victory as stamp of approval for the newly-formed NEDA Government under the leadership of Chief Minister Pema Khandu.
