IMPHAL, Nov 24 - The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which had no MLA in the 60-member Manipur Assembly, managed to win both the Thangmeiband and Thongju Assembly constituency seats by defeating ruling Congress candidates in the by-elections, the results of which were announced today.
Former All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) MLAs Kh Joykishan (12,104) of Thangmeiband and Th Biswajit (14,606) of Thongju, who contested the by-poll on BJP tickets this time, defeated their rival Congress candidates Jyotin Waikhom (10,197) and Bijoy Koijam (11,393) by a margin of 1,907 and 3,213 votes, respectively.
Dr Gurumayum Tonsana of Manipur Democratic Peoples Front, who had contested in both the Assembly constituencies, got only 55 votes in Thangmeiband and 54 votes in Thongju. A total of 150 votes went to none of the candidates (72 in Thangmeiband and 78 in Thongju).
Reacting to the win, BJP Manipur Pradesh president and former Union Sports Minister Th Chaoba said, Tuesdays victory in both the constituencies is peoples victory over money and muscle power of the ruling front in the State. I think this trend will also get reflected in the ensuing State Assembly elections in 2017, Chaoba added. Both the elected BJP candidates in their separate interviews with the media here, appreciated the wishes of the people and expressed their desire to work for the welfare of the people.
The by-elections were necessitated after the two MLAs, Kh Joykishan of Thangmeiband and Th Biswajit of Thongju, were disqualified under the Anti-Defection Law on May 28 this year.
