BJP weighs post-poll prospects

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, May 7 - With the day of counting of votes for the elections to the Assam Legislative Assembly drawing closer, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today reviewed its prospects and discussed the steps need to be taken on the day of the counting by the candidates and their agents.

BJP sources told The Assam Tribune that senior party leaders, including party general secretaries Ram Madhav and Ram Lal, were among those who attended the meeting chaired by the president of the State unit of the party, Sarbananda Sonowal, who is also the chief ministerial candidate of the party. The meeting was attended by Members of Parliament, all the candidates, district committee office-bearers and election agents.

The party general secretaries expressed confidence that the BJP and its alliance partners Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the Bodoland Peoples Front (BPF) would be able to form the next government in the State as the people of Assam came out in large numbers to exercise their franchise for a change. They pointed out that the responsibilities of the party would increase in the days to come because of high expectations of the people of Assam and all-out efforts would have to be made to provide a totally corruption-free government to the people.

It is for the first since the elections, the candidates of the BJP got together with the party leaders and there were free and frank discussion on the election prospects. A few candidates also submitted details about their prospects in sealed envelopes to the central leaders of the party. However, the BJP is yet to make the final assessment of the seats likely to be won by the party. We have not counted the number of seats likely to be won by the BJP candidates, but we are confident that the BJP led alliance would come to power, BJP sources added.
