BJP using influx issue as poll plank: Gogoi

By STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, July 5 Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today hit back at Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national president Rajnath Singh on the issue of illegal infiltration, stating that the vexed problem is only used as a poll plank and that the saffron party is in no way committed towards solving it.

Had the BJP been committed, issues related to unemployment, flood and erosion would also have been raised by it with similar intensity. They just want to keep the issue alive for their political gain and is not at all serious about solving it, Gogoi told media persons here today.

There is not a single instance during the NDA tenure when the issue of infiltration was raised by the BJP. In fact, it was I who wrote to the then Home Minister LK Advani over Indo-Bangla border issues and the need to fence it, he said.

The BJP is now shedding crocodile tears. What were they doing when people were being killed in the name of secret killings? Such incidents cannot take place without the connivance of the Centre, Gogoi alleged.

He further lambasted the top BJP leadership saying that the party is full of ambitious leaders and with a record number of candidates for the post of the Prime Minister, the leadership is a divided lot. We are now going ahead with the NRC update as well, and the meeting with the AASU was fruitful. Of course, infiltration is a problem and the Government is trying with all its sincerity to check the problem, he pointed out.

While asserting that the BJP has no reason to rejoice with the Congress gaining absolute majority in the GMC polls, Gogoi said that a BJP-AGP alliance would hardly pose any threat to the ruling party.
