BJP, Trinamool demands repoll in Manipur

By Sobhapati Samom

IMPHAL, Jan 30 After the demand for re-polling mostly in Hill Assembly constituencies by the ruling Congress and opposition Janata Dal (U), the BJP has demanded re-polling in 13 polling stations including eight in Chief Minister O Ibobi Singhs Thoubal constituency.

All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) Manipur unit leaders have also demanded re-polling in most of the polling booths in the Hills alleging that the armed underground cadres involved in the talks with the government manipulated the voting in most of the polling stations in five Hill districts.

We demand re-poll in the polling stations where the proxy voting and intimidation took place so that the voters can be given an opportunity to choose their representatives, said AITC Manipur unit President Kim Gangte while speaking to reporters here today. Trinamool has 47 candidates, largest after 60 candidates of Congress.

Though the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) PC Lawmkunga is yet to release the official figure of re-polling, media reports here speculated that re-polling may be ordered in at 12 polling stations.

Meanwhile, demanding re-poll in 13 polling stations, BJP National Secretary Tapir Gao urged the Election Commission of India to take up necessary action for misconduct and violence of election guideline in Manipur polls.

We have seen the nexus of Presiding Officers (PO) and men sitting in power. All POs in Thoubal constituency were from Thoubal and Sugunu, said the former Arunachal Pradesh MP. We will take up this issue as this is gross violation of election guidelines.

The partys North East States in-charge Chandrasekhar Rao demanded suspension of Returning Officer in Thoubal district besides taking up action against the POs of all eight polling stations in Thoubal constituency.

Alleging that NSCN-IM cadres manipulated some polling stations in favour of the Naga Peoples Party (NPF) candidate ST Nunglung Victor while United Kuki Liberation Front (UKLF), a Kuki underground outfit worked in favour of Congress candidate Thangkholen Haokip, the JD (U) has also demanded re-polling at six polling stations in Chandel. Congress has demanded re-poll in 18 polling booths under Karong constituency in Senapati.
