GUWAHATI, Sept 22 � With the AGP backtracking on its promise to be friends with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) till the coming Assembly elections, the saffron party now has decided to fight it out against all former friends and foes in the election arena.
Though the State BJP on Wednesday regretted the snapping of ties by the main opposition party, it asserted that it was ready to contest the assembly polls all alone and that its workers were concentrating on strengthening the party's base at the grassroots level.
Addressing mediapersons here, president of the State BJP Ranjit Dutta said that the alliance was forged with the objective to provide an alternative to the people who wanted to see a change in the State's politics.
"In the greater interest of the people of the State we had forged an alliance with the AGP and agreed to continue this friendship till 2011," said Dutta, adding that it was not for him to assess whether the development would erode all the expectations of an alternative to the Congress.
Dutta said that the people of the State would say it through the ballot whether the alliance was a bane or a boon.
However going by all the preparations in the BJP camp in the last six months involving the district units, the central leaders and the innumerable rallies, it can be said that the party was expecting such a cold shoulder from the AGP.
