BJP sweeps Dergaon civic board

DERGAON, Feb 12 � Continuing the Modi juggernaut, the BJP today scored a landslide victory in the Dergaon Municipal Board (DMB) elections by winning 8 of the 10 Wards, leaving the outgoing Congress with only 1 Ward and completely decimating the AGP, which drew a blank.

The BJP candidates won the eight seats from Ward No. 1 to 8 and left Ward No. 9 for Independent and Ward No. 10 for the Congress. The winning cadidates for BJP are Sneholata Nath (353), Rita Nath (486), Arunabh Kalita (791), Rita Nath (752), Madhumita Bora (402), Pradumnya Bhatta (327), Sushil Baldowa (206) and Maina Dutta (695), Jatin Bora (325, Independent) and Sital Somani (199, Congress) were the other winners.

In the elections, Pradumnya Bhatta (327) of BJP defeated his rival, ex-vice chairman Tukumoni Kachari (299) of the Congress.

Though according to BJP leader Bedanta Bora the name of the new chairman of the Board will be finalised by the elected members of the party, common people are all supporting Pradumnya Bhatta (Sankar), who was elected from Ward No. 6. It is pertinent to mention here that except Jatin Bora, all the others are new faces in the Board.

On the other hand, in the Golaghat Municipal Board elections, out of 13 seats the ruling Congress won 10 seats and BJP won 2. The result of Ward No. 11 is yet to be finalised.

The winning Congress candidates are Jogen Bora (633), Aftab Ahmed (707), Ghanashyam Barhoi (1,093), Sumitra Paul Majumdar (671), Ganesh Paul (1055), Gitarani Sen (781), Babita Gupta (386), Meera Dutta (589), Juri Das Rajkhowa (647) and Rupanjali Gogoi (334). The winning candidates of BJP are Jumi Dowerah (737) and Ranjan Dev Chaliha (627).
