GUWAHATI, May 4 � The Bharatiya Janata Party�s Assam trade union unit was officially launched today with the target of bringing all unorganised workers under its banner.
The president of this Bharatiya Janata Mazdoor Mahasangha, Assam Pradesh Rameshwar Teli said that with this initiative, the party�s trade union activities would now get an impetus in the State.
�In comparison to other parties, the BJP�s trade union activities were very limited as there was no formal unit. Now with a formal trade union organisation we would be able to concentrate more on trade union activities,� said Teli.
National president of Bharatiya Janata Mazdoor Mahasangha Prahlad Patel who was in the State in connection with this official announcement of the State unit said that despite all the policies for their welfare, the marginalized section in the society is still living under pathetic conditions.
�The unorganised sector in the country has always been at the receiving end. The government has been long indifferent towards their grievances,� said Patel adding that the party�s Assam unit of the trade union will register the various section of the working class in the next couple of months.
It needs to be mentioned here that the State trade union unit has decided to reach out to the tea garden workers, the people involved in the agricultural sector, the motor workers, the small tea growers and the jewelers.
�There are around 40 lakh people engaged in the unorganised sector in Assam. And they are being deprived of all benefits,� said Bishnu Ghosh, national general secretary.
Ghosh said that the unorganised sector in Assam had no social security and the government should take the necessary steps to ensure social security to the unorganized sector.
The party has been insisting for a monthly allowance of Rs 1500 for those involved in the unorganised sector, access to ESI level hospitals and identity card for the unorganized sector.
