BJP proposal on persecuted migrants

By Spl correspondent

NEW DELHI, Dec 2 The BJP has moved a private members resolution seeking amendment to the Citizenship Act to grant Indian citizenship to people who have migrated from neighbouring Bangladesh and Pakistan on account of religious persecution. Silchar MP Kabindra Purkayastha of the BJP told newsmen that he has moved a private members resolution in the Lok Sabha calling for amendment of the citizenship rules to grant citizenship rights to those who have slipped into Assam on account of religions persecution or civil disturbance in the countries of their origin.

Purkayasthas resolution further calls for formulation and implementation of welfare schemes for all-round development and welfare of such persons.

The Silchar MP said the North East MPs Forum has decided to meet the Prime Minister and seek his intervention in ensuring early completion of the Lumding-Silchar Broad Gauge Conversion Project.

He said the Project, which has missed several deadlines is nowhere near completion, as only 60 per cent of the total project work has been completed so far. Because of the delay in completion of the Project several North Eastern States including Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura are suffering, he added.
