IMPHAL, Aug 22 - BJP Manipur Pradesh has congratulated Major General Laiphrakpam Nishikanta Singh on his promotion to Lieutenant General in the Indian Army.

BJP Manipur Pradesh general secretary M Asnikumar in a congratulatory note on Thursday said, �We are very proud that you are the second Manipuri as well as one of the few Army officers from the entire NE region to get this esteemed post in the Indian army.�

Maj Gen LN Singh was approved for next rank, thereby making him only the second officer from Manipur, after Lt Gen K Himalay Singh, to bring such laurels to the State, army sources said. Presently he is the Commandant of a training establishment of Indian Army.

A JAKLI Officer, he played a key role in the rescue mission, in Afghanistan, in 2010, of Indian Medical Mission, after it was attacked by terrorists, said PRO (Defence Wing) in a press release. This mission sent back the body of late Maj Laishram Jotin, who was later, awarded Ashok Chakra.

He joined NDA in July 1975 and was commissioned into the Army (9 JAKLI) in June 1979.
