BJP-IPFT in a tug of war over BAC posts

By CORRESPONDENT

AGARTALA, May 14 - The tug of war between BJP and its ally Indigenous Peoples Front of Tripura (IPFT) continues as angry supporters of NC Debbarma-led party blocked two RD Block Offices Lefunga in West Tripura district and Killa under Gomati district demanding removal of newly-appointed chairpersons of Block Advisory Committee (BAC).

Recently, the State Government has named chairpersons of 52 RD Blocks by issuing a notification to carry forward development works in the Block areas as CPI(M) controlled BAC has already become dormant after the humiliating defeat in the last Assembly elections.

However, selection of BAC chairpersons has irked IPFT supporters and they have started agitating in two offices of Block Development Officers (BDOs) on Monday.

Hundreds of IPFT workers and supporters put BDO office, Lefunga RD Block in West Tripura district under lock demanding removal of Ranabir Debbarma, a BJP leader from the post of BAC chairperson. They want their leader to be made chairperson of BAC, Lefunga RD block, said a police officer over telephone.

Although tension is high in and around Lefunga RD Block area, the situation is under control and steps were being taken to get BDO office freed from agitation.

At Killa RD Block office in Gomati district also hundreds of IPFT supporters are agitating to get their leader to be made BAC chairperson. Normal life has come to a standstill due to the agitation by IPFT.
