BJP groundwork to fine-tune strategy for 2019 LS polls from today

By PRANJAL BHUYAN

GUWAHATI, Sept 12 - With the ruling BJP scheduled to hold a series of meetings over the next three days beginning tomorrow to, among other things, fine-tune its strategy for the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, the saffron party has decided to focus on areas like media, social media and government flagship programmes as part of the plan to target gains in the elections.

Sources in the ruling party told this newspaper that a long series of programmes are in the pipeline over the next one month to lay the groundwork for poll campaign.

The three-day deliberations of the State BJP will begin here tomorrow with a meeting of the vistaraks (full-time workers) and in-charges of all Assembly and Lok Sabha constituencies, followed by the Lok Sabha Election Management Committee meet and the State-level core committee meet on September 14, and concluding with a meeting of the State office-bearers, district in-charges and district presidents on September 15.

Among other things, discussions will focus primarily on the NRC update process and on the partys organisational matters. Besides, we will also fine-tune our Lok Sabha polls strategy during the meetings. Training programmes for office-bearers and members of various morchas are also scheduled to be held later this month. This will be followed by the State executive and State council meetings on October 6-7 at Majuli and the district executive meetings and mandal-level meetings at various places afterwards, a senior BJP leader told The Assam Tribune.

He added, The State government is likely to formally launch a major scheme on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti on October 2. This is intended to reaffirm the BJP-led governments commitment to the welfare of the people and will also sound our poll bugle. And then in October, we will be holding conferences of our panna prabharis (page in-charges) in all 14 Lok Sabha constituencies of Assam.

Sources said the saffron party wants to tap the younger, including the first-time voters, besides the electorate belonging to the weaker segments and those residing in rural areas.

For that reason, we are focusing keenly on making the people aware about the various government schemes. In addition, we are working on further strengthening our presence in the media and social media segments, said a leader.

The party has formed four separate departments to look after media, social media, legal sector, and on promoting and spreading awareness about the flagship schemes of the Central and State governments.

These departments have been activated in all the 14 Lok Sabha constituencies of Assam. They are very crucial. For example, social media is nowadays playing a crucial role in any political battle, especially to attract the young voters, who make up over 65-70 per cent of the total electorate. Similarly, the economically weaker sections have benefited from our governments flagship schemes and so we need a dedicated department to focus on that sector, said the BJP office-bearer.

He added that three dedicated party workers have been appointed for each of the four departments in all 14 Lok Sabha constituencies.
