BJP flays Govt over Central funds

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Feb 17 The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday accused the ruling Congress government in the State of misappropriation of funds released by the Central government for various developmental works, including flood relief and management.

Addressing mediapersons here, senior party MP Bijoya Chakraborty said that substantial Central funds had been released or sanctioned for flood relief and management but the State government apparently had failed to utilize it.

Criticizing the State government, the BJP leader said that the flood-affected people did not get adequate relief despite the Central funds being at the disposal of the State government.

Giving details, the MP said that under the Flood Management Programme, the Central government has provided assistance to the tune of Rs 745 crore to the State government. Under the 12th Plan, additional 41 flood management works/schemes of Assam amounting to Rs 1387 crore have been approved by the Centre.

The Central government has been extending substantial financial assistance to the State government through various plan schemes to manage the flood problem, she said.

The MP further said that an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh each was sanctioned to the next of kin in each death case and Rs 50,000 for every serious injury case under the Prime Ministers National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the floods in Assam in July and August 2014. She expressed doubt whether the State government has disbursed this amount to the needy beneficiaries.

Chakraborty also alleged that Rs 144 crore that was provided last year by the Centre has not yet been released by the State government nor has it submitted UCs for the earlier releases.
