BJP demands white paper on pact with Bangladesh

By Correspondent

AGARTALA, Sept 20 The BJP State unit today demanded publication of a white paper on the protocol signed under the framework of Indira-Mujib Pact in 1974, which was inked during Prime Minister Manmohan Singhs recent visit to Dhaka.

We came to know that India and Bangladesh had struck a deal on border disputes during the Prime Ministers historic visit to Bangladesh but people are still unaware on the development, said Sudhindra Dasgupta, BJPs State unit president.

Demanding for revealing the agreement on the border disputes, Dasgupta said that the government should publish the settled-map or white paper on the disputed areas like Muhurichar in Belonia and Chandannagar in Kamalpur subdivision immediately to clear the doubts.

In the statement, he also mentioned the resentment in Assam over the border settlement with Bangladesh. Political parties like Asom Gana Parisad, youth organisations and intellectuals have strongly opposed the move of handing over Indian soil to Bangladesh as per the agreement signed between the two countries.

However, reports from Kamalpur indicate people are upbeat over the border settlement with Bangladesh. As per the settlement, boundary shall be drawn along Sonaraicherra river just opposite of Indian soil (from existing border pillar no-1904 to boundary pillar no 1905) as surveyed jointly and agreed in July 2011. It means Chandannagar in Dhalai district will remain with India that has brought virtually cheers among local people.

Another disputed area right over Muhurichar in South Tripura district has also got settled with Bangladesh agreeing to allow Indian authority to erect fencing along the Zero-Line. Boundary in this segment shall be drawn and this should be fixed boundary. Both sides should raise embankments on their respective sides with a view to stabilising the river in its present course as stipulated in the 1974 agreement, according to inputs procured from the administration.
