BJP comes up trumps in council polls

GUWAHATI, Dec 17 - The BJP maintained its winning run in the elections in Assam as the party swept the polls to the Deuri and Thengal Kachari Autonomous Councils. The BJP won 13 of the 22 seats in the polls to the Thengal Kachari Autonomous Council, while its ally AGP won three seats. The Congress managed to win only four seats, while the remaining two seats were bagged by independents.

In the Deuri Autonomous Council, the BJP won seven of the 17 seats, while AGP won one. The Congress bagged only two seats, with the independents wresting rest of the seats.

Commenting on the BJP performance, the party�s State vice president Santanu Bharali said the people have faith on the party, while Assam Pradesh Congress Committee spokesman Apurba Bhattacharya said the polls to the autonomous councils normally go in favour of the ruling party.
