BJP central panel to take final call

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, March 2 Though the Assam State committee of the BJP is in favour of contesting the ensuing Lok Sabha elections alone, the central committee of the party will take the final decision on the issue of coming into a political understanding with the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP). The final decision in this regard is expected within a week.

Talking to The Assam Tribune, the president of the State unit of the BJP, Sarbananda Sonowal said that the BJP workers in Assam are in favour of contesting the polls alone to strengthen the base of the party. He pointed out that the BJP had contested the last elections like the Panchayat polls, Guwahati Municipal Corporation polls and other elections to the autonomous councils alone. He revealed that the State party unit has already informed the central committee about its views on the issue. However, at the same time, he said that being a disciplined party, the State unit would accept the decision of the central committee. On the selection of candidates, Sonowal said that nearly 200 persons have sought party tickets to contest the Lok Sabha polls from the State and a State election committee has been formed to examine the merits and demerits of the applicants. He said that the State election committee would meet within this week to prepare a detailed report, which would be sent to the central committee.
