DIBRUGARH, Aug 23 - The urn containing the ashes of late former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee was ceremoniously immersed in the Brahmaputra at Kacharighat here at around 5 PM in the presence of Water Resources Minister Keshab Mahanta, Minister for Power Tapan Kumar Gogoi and Labour and Employment Minister Pallab Lochan Das.
The ashes were brought to Mohanbari Airport here today by Water Resources Minister Keshab Mahanta and Minister for Power Tapan Kumar Gogoi. The urn was later carried in a decorated CRPF truck and a cavalcade to Chowkidinghee ground where it was placed under a marquee for all-faith prayer and public homage.
Jorhat MP Kamakhya Prasad Tasa, Dibrugarh MP Rameshwar Teli and almost all MLAs of Upper Assam attended the all-faith prayer and public homage. Eminent writer and educationist Dr Nagen Saikia, Vice-Chancellor of Dibrugarh University Dr Ranjit Tamuli were among the dignitaries who paid respect to the former Prime Minister.
Silchar staff Correspondent adds: Amidst chanting of mantras and echoes from a fairly large gathering, State Minister of Forest, Environment, Excise and Fisheries Parimal Suklabaidya along with Minister for Irrigation, Handloom and Textiles Ranjit Dutta, Hill Area Development Minister Sum Ronghang, former Union Minister and veteran BJP leader Kabindra Purakayastha immersed the ashes of Atal Bihari Vajpayee in the Barak river at Sadarghat on Thursday evening.
� Atal ji was a father figure for all of us and we are extremely fortunate to be a part of the Asthi Kalash visarjan event in the Barak river along with other parts of the state and the country. We have plans for installing a statue of Vajpayee ji at Silchar,� Suklabaidya said.
Ranjit Dutta informed that the state government has plans to launch schemes in the name of Vajpayee for the benefits of the poor people.
�Vajpayee ji was a huge inspiration for all of us and as his ashes were immersed in the water of Barak and Brahmaputra rivers in the state, we hope that his blessings shall guide us towards prosperity in the coming days,� Dutta mentioned.
Dhubri Correspondent adds: Ashes of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee were immersed at the point where river Gadadhar meets Brahmaputra by State Ministers Chandan Brahma, Bhabesh Kalita, Phani Bhusan Choudhary and Assam State Agricultural Marketing Board Chairman Palit Bora in the presence of many MLAs, officers from the district administration and BJP party workers.�
Earlier�on Thursday, the ashes were brought to Bilashipara at around�8 am�and a rich tribute was paid.
