Biswajit Daimary resigns as BPF working president

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Nov 11 - Rajya Sabha MP Biswajit Daimary today resigned from the post of working president of the Bodoland Peoples Front (BPF) and said he will soon be joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Daimary has, however, so far not resigned from the primary membership of the BPF. He will quit BPF as well as resign from the Rajya Sabha in near future.

Daimarys decision comes ahead of the elections to the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) which is likely to take place in December, and also at a time when relations between NDA partners, BJP and BPF, have worsened.

Having been member of the BPF from the date of partys inception, it is now time for me to move on. I am resigning as working president of BPF as on date of this letter... this is a path that has been drawing itself out over the last three months. While my aim and purpose remain the same as it has always been from the very beginning to serve the people of my State and country, I believe I am unable to do this anymore within this party, Daimary stated in a letter to BPF president Hagrama Mohilary.

Interacting with the media here, Daimary said that the primary aims and objectives of addressing the problems and aspirations of the Bodo community have been achieved, especially after the Accord signed with four factions of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) in January this year.

Daimary said that he now wants to work in a wider arena and take the issues and problems of Assam and the North East to a national platform.

Thinking on those lines I am now relinquishing my role in the BPF. In the coming days I will join a national political party, he said.

Asked which party he will be joining, Daimary said, I will join the BJP.

Daimary said that he will soon quit the BPF formally as well as his Rajya Sabha membership after going through the legal and technical formalities which are necessary for an elected Parliamentary representative to follow.

He said that he is no longer merely a Bodo leader but will henceforth represent all communities of Assam.

He added that he has no personal conflict with the BPF or with Hagrama Mohilary.

Time and situation compels people to act in particular ways, said the three-time Rajya Sabha MP.

Daimary alleged that in recent times BPF has lost its way and become a party which only opposes new decisions of the State government.

In this regard he mentioned BPFs opposition to the peace accord after having been a participant in it and the partys opposition to establishment of the Bodo Kachari Welfare Autonomous Council. That has given rise to various misconceptions and also misunderstanding among communities residing in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), Daimary added.

I do not agree with that strategy, he said, adding that the BPF no longer has any comprehensive policies for the BTR.

It is noteworthy that Finance Minister and NEDA convenor Himanta Biswa Sarma had earlier this week stated that many senior BPF leaders, including Daimary and party MLA Emmanuel Mushahary, will soon join the BJP.

Daimary was first elected to the Rajya Sabha in 2008. He was subsequently re-elected for a second term in 2014 and for a third consecutive term earlier this year.
