Bishnupriya Manipuris demand Central OBC status

By Staff Correspondent

SILCHAR, Nov 19 - People from the Bishnupriya Manipuri community on Thursday assembled here to support the demand raised by the Nikhil Bishnupriya Manipuri Mahasabha for including the community in the Central Other Backward Classes (OBC).

Students, youths and womens associations representing the community gathered at the Khudiram Bose point. Respond to our legitimate demands, give jobs to our sons and daughters, said 91-year-old Maago Devi during the protest.

Many speakers gave vent to their anger saying, we were born in India, where no one listens to our legitimate demands.

In a memorandum to Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal through the Cachar Deputy Commissioner, general secretary Nilmani Sinha of the State committee of the Mahasabha said that under a notification vide no. TAD/BC/17/58/131 dated September 12, 1961, the Bishnupriya Manipuri community had availed all kinds of facilities under the OBC category in both State and Central government establishments.

But, after the separation of Nos.13 to 31 in the State OBC list on November 2, 2012 in pursuance of the Gauhati High Court order dated August 5, 1999 withdrawing the Central OBC status, the community has been deprived of all facilities with respect to the Central OBC status, the memorandum stated.

In the memorandum, the Mahasabha, the apex body of the Bishnupriya Manipuri community, has demanded a rectification in the Central OBC status in the larger interest of the people belonging to the community. It also urged the Chief Minister to take up the matter with the Centre.
