Bio-toilets in 16 rail coaches

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Nov 4 The Northeast Frontier Railway has inducted zero discharge bio-toilets in 16 coaches of the GuwahatiChennai Express from October 14. The toilets were designed jointly by Indian Railways and DRDO.

With these toilets there will be no discharge of human excreta in platforms or at rail tracks. The anaerobic bacteria inside the toilets consume waste material and convert it into water and gas. The water passing through chlorine tank is discharged as clean water and the gas generated evaporates into the atmosphere. It also prevents damages of tracks by way of corrosion.
