�Bio-resources vanishing due to people�s ignorance�

JALUKBARI, April 10 - A lecture programme of the Zoological Society of Assam (ZSA) was organised today in the Department of Zoology, Gauhati University. Prof GK Kulkarni, retired professor and former head of zoology department and an expert of biodiversity from the Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University, Aurangabad spoke on �Ecology and Animal adaptation�.

In his deliberation Prof Kulkarni discussed many burning issues related to habitat destruction, global climate change and green house gases. He also spoke about the precious biodiversity of the north-eastern region of India and lamented that many of the bio-resources are vanishing rapidly due to people�s lack of knowledge about sustainable development and proper education.

Prof Kulkarni, who is at present a visiting professor at the Rajiv Gandhi University, Arunachal Pradesh, earlier visited Rangia College and delivered a lecture on environmental issues. Today�s lecture at GU was attended by many postgraduate students, research scholars and young faculty members.

Meanwhile, the newly formed executive body of the ZSA with Priyabrata Lahkar as president and Prof Jogen Chandra Kalita as general secretary that was elected at its biennial general body meeting held at Gauhati University on March 31, will take charge shortly.
